Universal Credit
If you are under 25 and struggling with money, you may be able to claim Universal Credit. You can apply even if you are working, and there are special rules for 16 and 17 year olds.
Claiming Universal Credit as a young person
If you are dealing with debt or struggling to cover your living costs, claiming benefits for the first time can feel confusing. Universal Credit (UC) is the main benefit for people on a low income, and you may be entitled to it even if you did not realise.
Getting the right benefits in place can make a real difference when you are dealing with debt. It can help cover essentials like rent, food, and bills while you get back on your feet.
Who can claim
To claim Universal Credit, you usually need to meet all of these conditions:
- You are 18 or over (but 16 and 17 year olds can claim in some circumstances; see below)
- You are on a low income or need help with your living costs
- You are out of work, working (including self-employed or part-time), or unable to work because of a health condition
- You live in the UK
- You are under State Pension age
- You have 拢16,000 or less in savings, money, and investments
If you are 16 or 17
You do not have to be 18 to claim Universal Credit. You may be eligible if you are 16 or 17 and meet certain conditions, for example if you have a child, are pregnant, or are living independently. Check the full list of conditions on the GOV.UK Universal Credit eligibility page.
How to apply
You apply for Universal Credit online through your GOV.UK Universal Credit account. You will need to verify your identity, provide details about your income and housing, and attend an appointment at your local Jobcentre Plus.
